Nauset Light: A Personal History
There has been a lighthouse at Nauset Beach in North Eastham, Massachusetts, since the first set of “The Three Sisters of Nauset” was constructed together with a brick Keepers House in 1838. The structures have since been modified extensively but have attracted a multitude of visitors to the Cape shore, captivated by the nature of this frontier outpost at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

Description
The Only Complete History of Nauset Light
Mary Daubenspeck vanRoden was the most recent “Keeper” from her purchase of the Keeper’s House in 1982 until her untimely death in 2001 during which time she oversaw the 1998 move of the Keeper’s House to maintain its rightful association with the Nauset lighthouse that had avoided the relentless erosion of the coast by being relocated in 1996.
In 1995, Mary published “Nauset Light: A Personal History” that was a “Personal History of the Nauset Light, the 1875 Lightkeeper’s House and the 1892 Oil House” and included a forward by F. Ross Holland, the author of America’s Lighthouses: The Illustrated History Since 1716, in which he stated: “Ms. vanRoden, clearly and sensitively, tells the story of the Nauset Light Station and efforts to preserve it. But at the end she must leave us hanging, for the final determination of the fate of the old light station is still unknown. She is optimistic, and the reader comes away with the sense that one of these days success will crown this splendid grassroots effort.”
In 1998, Mary intended to revise this book to include information about the lighthouse and Keeper’s Cottage relocation, but her health deteriorated over the course of the next three years, preventing this. Virtually all copies of her book were sold, so her brothers Andrew, Timothy, Peter, Stephen and Josef, reprinted her book in 2021 with an added initial section describing the move of the Keepers House. This 2nd printing is now available from this website.
